To drive in Spain, all drivers must present a valid driver’s license and a passport or identity document.
The rules vary depending on the driver’s country of origin:
A- European Union, United Kingdom, or European Economic Area (EEA):
An international permit is not required. A national license is sufficient, provided that it is accompanied by an identity card or passport.
B- Countries with an agreement with Spain: (for example: Switzerland, Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, South Korea, etc.):
An international permit is not required; only a driver’s license and passport are required.
C- Other countries (outside the EU, the United Kingdom, or those without an agreement with Spain):
Drivers must have their valid national license and an International Driving Permit (IDP), always accompanied by their passport. Both permits must state that they are authorized to drive the type of vehicle rented (car, motorcycle, scooter, etc.). For motorcycles or scooters, both the national and international permits must specifically indicate the category of motorcycle authorized. In these cases, the 3-year driving license requirement for motorcycles up to 125 cc cannot be applied.
